UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School
Dr. Reiri Sono is an Assistant Professor and an Associate Director of Molecular Pathology and Clinical Informatics at the UTHealth Houston Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She finished her Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowship at UCLA and the Clinical Informatics Fellowship at UCSF after graduating from her AP/CP Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Sono champions the validation and QC of in-house molecular assays presently live or soon to go live. She also serves as the Physician Champion in her department's use of EHR and LIS. She leads technical discussions and advocates for pathologists and clinicians as UTHealth is nearing the Go-Live date of Epic Beaker. Her other role in informatics is digital imaging, particularly workflow development for FISH and other darkfield microscopy with the use of AI-powered diagnostic aids in scope. She programs with Python and Visual Basic as part of work and hobby. Her notable work includes building and maintaining a Microsoft Access database of clinical whole genome sequencing outputs at the UCLA Clinical Microbiology Lab (Director: Shangxin 'Shaun' Yang), which serves as a platform for a molecular antibiogram and several publications of significance in NGS assay QA and infectious disease trend discovery. She is passionate about resident education in molecular pathology, informatics, and digital pathology.
