Dr. Phyu Thwe is the associate director of the infectious disease testing laboratory at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY, and assistant professor of Pathology at Albert Einstein School of Medicine. She is a clinical microbiologist by training – she completed her BS in clinical laboratory science from Marquette University. She worked as a technologist in a microbiology laboratory in Massachusetts before pursuing her Ph.D at the University of Vermont.
She then completed her medical microbiology and public health fellowship from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.
She’s actively involved in the local NYCASM organization, currently serving as chair of the education committee. She’s also interested in promoting medical laboratory professional careers and is currently serving as vice chair of the Clinical Microbiology and Mentoring Subcommittee with the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). She is interested in mentoring and training laboratory science students, and pathology residents. Her clinical research interests include mycobacteriology, molecular infectious disease diagnosis, and Diagnostic stewardship.
