Hannah Wollenzien, PhD is a laboratory director for the Sanford Medical Genetics Laboratory. Dr. Wollenzien earned her PhD in basic biomedical sciences (genetics and molecular biology specialization) from the University of South Dakota, and performed her dissertation research in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Kareta at Sanford Research. Her research focused on mechanisms of tumor heterogeneity, cellular plasticity, and chemoresistance in small cell lung cancer. After completing her PhD, Dr. Wollenzien completed a two-year training program in clinical laboratory genetics and genomics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Wollenzien has expertise in both cytogenetics and molecular genetics, with a particular interest in genetic changes in cancer.
Dr. Wollenzien is board-eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (LGG specialty). She is a member of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, the College of American Pathologists, the Association for Molecular Pathology, and the Cancer Genomics Consortium. She enjoys teaching and mentoring graduate and medical students and participating in the education of residents that rotate through the laboratory.
